OPINION: 66% on Roosevelt | TIME
Less than a third of the people (27.6%) are out-&-out for Roosevelt for a Fourth Term. A slightly larger number (29.6%) are out-&-out for Dewey. But if the election had been held in mid-July, Roosevelt would have won by a landslide. This is the net result of Elmo Roper’s latest FORTUNE Survey of Public Opinion.
FORTUNE made three different probes. The first:
“Which of these comes closest to expressing your feelings about the coming Presidential election?”
There’s no question but what Roosevelt will make the best possible President for the next four years, and I will be glad to have a chance to vote for him 27.6%
There are many things about Roosevelt I don’t like, but he still would make a better President than Dewey for the next four years 21.6
While I think the Republicans should have nominated someone better, Dewey still would make a better President than Roosevelt for the next four years 13.1
Dewey was a great choice for the Republicans and I will be very glad to vote for him 29.6
Don’t know 8.1%
The second FORTUNE probe, approaching from another angle:
“If both the war in Europe and the war in the Pacific are still going on at the time of the next Presidential election . . . which, would you probably vote for?”
Roosevelt . . . .50.8%
Dewey ….42.2
Don’t Know. ..7.0
“If the war in Europe is over, but the war in the Pacific is still going on. . . .”
Roosevelt ….. 47.1%
Dewey ….. 45.2
Don’t Know…. . 7.7
“If the war is over in both places, but the peace terms are not fully worked out. . . .”
Roosevelt . . . .40.0%
Dewey ….. 49.6
Don’t Know. …. 10.4
But only 18.5% of the people believed that the war in Europe would be over by November, another point in Mr. Roosevelt’s favor.
In its third probe, FORTUNE asked: “Regardless of what you hope, who do you think will win?”
Roosevelt …. 66.4 %
Dewey ….. 21.9
Don’t Know . …. 11.7
